N.B. Andersen (1855-1944), Redwood Falls Minnesota
Portræt af N.B. Andersen.
Andersen, N. B. Also Known As: Anderson, N. B.
Studio: Star Photo Studio.Locations: Studio: N. B. Andersen Studio, Address: Third Street, Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Dates of operation: 1884-1912, Address: Morton, Minnesota, Address: Belview, MinnesotaDecades Worked in Minnesota: 1880s; 1890s; 1900s; 1910s, Moved To: Florida. Notes: Began his business in Redwood Falls in 1884; Opened galleries in Morton and Belview later; Portraits and landscapes, picture framer (ad 1906), real estate agent (ad 1909); Sold Redwood Falls and Morton studios to the Hockett brothers in 1912. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, a photographer plays a huge role in the story of any event. While still true today, it was even more the case in the early days of Redwood Falls, and standing behind the camera taking those pictures was Niels B. Andersen. Andersen, who came to town in 1884, immediately established himself as a photographer extraordinaire and took photos of some of the most important events and people in town. Born near Copenhagen, Denmark Jan. 29, 1855, Andersen came to the United States with his family when he was 14. He started working in the field of photography when he was 28. The very next year, he arrived in Redwood Falls. According to the Redwood Gazette, when he was dropped off he made his way to the current photo gallery and within a short period of time became its new owner. The era of N.B. Andersen Photography was born. In 1889 a fire burned the original Andersen studio to the ground, but the businessman quickly adapted erecting a large tent on the site soon after the fire. |
By the turn of the century, Andersen had a new storefront and a well-established photo business in the community and captured the history of a community through its events and its faces for nearly 60 years.
While Andersen dabbled in meteorology and spent a number of years serving as an official weather observer for the federal government, it was truly in his photographs that Andersen’s reputation had grown. “His portraits by the thousands are of people almost impossible to identify now, stretching as they did over three decades, but they have recorded the faces of the pioneers, farmers and merchants and the styles of dress of the day,” recorded the Gazette in its Jan. 2, 1964 edition. For years the public benefitted from the work of Andersen, and long after he gave up photography his photos were still admired. In fact, the negatives of those photos became a valuable part of the town’s historic record. Unfortunately, said Gary Revier, local historian, those negatives have disappeared. However, he is confident they are still somewhere in the community, and one day he believes they are going to reappear. Andersen took many photos of street scenes in Redwood Falls and recorded events, including when the first car rolled down the street. Andersen’s wife, Sarah was killed in a automobile accident in 1936. She was struck by a car as she was returning to the photography studio. The couple had moved to Florida for a period of time, but returned to Redwood Falls to live out the rest of their lives. Andersen died in 1944 and is buried in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. Today people still enjoy the photos of Andersen. He certainly left a legacy behind that helps tell the story of those early days in Redwood Falls.” Kilde HER. |

Bill Jones, Washington DC har gjort mig opmærksom på et patent, udstedt til fotograf S.C. Madsen i 1891. Se patentet HER - og på siden her til højre.
Formålet med opfindelsen er: The object of my invention is to enable the operator to take a great number of copies or several copies of several photographs or other objects all on one plate without having to remove the plate from the camera during the operation and without having to focus the camera but once. Det svarer ganske præcist til de opfindelser, som i Danmark senere blev patenteret af Polyfoto, Carl Johan Rixen, 1883-1941 og Norka Hansen. Bill Jones Washington DC: Most recent CDV find. Studio of Søren Christian Madsen, Sleepy Eye, Minnesota (ca. 1884-1892).
ks like the studio is quite primitive and outdoor - with the grass (?) on the ground. But the number 17.383 (?) should reflect the number of portraits taken by the photographer. |

(No Medal.) S. O. MADSEN. PHOTOGRAPHIC COPYING APPARATUS. No 448,447. Patented Mar. 17, 1891 WITNESSES, %M /Lwyky I AM ATTURIVLX Sit-arias Parent Ut l ties. SOREN (/lllilS llAN MADSEN, OF SLEEPY EYE LAKE, MINNESOTA. PHQTOGRAPHIC CGPYlNG APPARATUS. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,447, dated March 1'7, 1891. Application filed June 26, 1890. Serial No. 356,903. (No model.) To (LZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, SOREN CHRISTIAN MADSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sleepy Eye Lake, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photograph Copying Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification. "My invention has relation to photographic apparatus; and it consists in a photographic holder to be used in connection with a multiplying diaphragm and camera. In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face view of the photographic holder. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the diaphragm. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the photographic holder and a sectional view of the camera and diaphragm, showing the diaphragm in position immedi ately in front of the sensitized plate. The object of my invention is to enable the operator to take a great number of copies or several copies of several photographs or other objects all on one plate without having to remove the plate from the camera during the operation and without having to focus the camera but once. My inv'ention is described as follows: I make a photographic holder A, consisting of the backboard a, cross-rods a, and a front plate a provided with openings l, .3, 2, and 1. These openings may be of any shape desired. The crossrods of raise the said plate from the face of the board a and leave spaces a between the two, in which photographs or other pictures are placed, each one resting on the crossrod immediately below it. It will be seen that said openings -l, 3, i, and 1. maybe made to expose as much of the picture and no more than is desired to be copied. The diaphragm 13 consists of the board 1), adapted to tit and operate in the rear end of a camera I). Said board has in its center a vertical opening I), which is nearly as long as the board is high. Running parallel along with the bottom of said board is a cross-bar its upper edge beingalittle lower than the lower wall of the opening I). The purpose of this cross-bar is to furnish a bearing for the slide 4: and for the vertical rod b the upper end of which rests on a little block Z), and is secured to the said board near its top edge. Said vertical rod is a holderto keep the slides 1, 2, 3, and l in place, No. a resting on the vertical rod No. on 4:, No. 2 on 3, and No.1 on 2. There are no division-rods between the said slides, so that when all the slides are drawn back the entire vertical opening 1; is exposed. In my drawings I have illustrated [our openings i n the photogra ihic holder and four slides in the diaphragm; but I may ma e as many as desired, being restricted only by the size t of the camera and the size of the copies to be made. My invention is constructed, chiei ly, to make copies of photographs the size of a two-cent po tage-stamp but I may make them much larger. To operate the apparatus, place the multiplying diaphragm B, with the slides all closed, anda sensitized plate C in the multiplying camera D. Then place in opening No. 1 of the holder A a photograph or other picture and attach the holder to a head-rest by means of the rod to. Then after focusing the camera draw back the slide No. l. in the diaphragm, and a space on the sensitized plate equal to the size of the opening just made through the said diaphragm will be exposed to the light and the photograph will be copied. Then move the said sensitized plate horizontally a little distance to expose another part of it, and another copy will be taken, then again and again until a full line across the face of the plate is made. New close slide No. 1, put the same photograph in opening So. 2, and move the sensitized plate backward horizontally one space at a time, as before, and another row of the said photograph is taken. Then close slide No. 2 and put the photograph in opening No. 3, and then draw back slide No. and move the plate forward step by step, taking a copy each time until another row is taken, then close slide No. 3, put the photograph in opening X0. 4, and move back the slide No. 4-, and take that line and so on, taking as many lines as you have slides in the diaphragm. IVlien it is desired to fill the sensitized plate with copies of different pictures, draw back all the slides, leaving the entire opening I) exposed. Place different photographs in the photographic holder A, then expose the sensitized plate in the camera once. This will make a perpendicular line of different pictures. Then fill the photographic holder again with another set of pictures and move the sensitized plate sidewise, and this will make another perpendicular line of copies. Repeat this process until the plate is full of copies. 1 It is a fact known to the photographic art that the size of the copy does not depend upon the size of the original, but upon the size of the camera and the distance .it is from the original. So if I desire to make the copies the same size as the original Isitnate the camera so that the lens will be exactly equidistant from the original picture and the sensitized plate; but if I wish to make the copy smaller than the original I will situate the camera farther away from the original, and if still sinallerstill farther away, ObSGlV'. in g all the timeto have the originals far enough apart so that the light reflecting from the said original will each time pass through the lens and fall upon the openings left by drawing the slides 1 2 34, &c., and if I desire I may make what I inayterin a half-size picture by withdrawing two of the slides or a full-size picture by withdrawing all the slides, or I may make Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent. is 1. In combination with a photographic camera and a properly-spaced picture-holder, the multiplying-diaphragm B, consisting of the board I), having the vertical opening I), and slides 1, 2, 3, and 4, arranged to slde. upon said board and close the said opening, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. 2. In combination with a photographic camera D and a properly-spaced picture-holder A, the multiplying-diaphragm 13, consisting of the board I), having the vertical opening b slides 1, 2, 3, and 4, cross-bar b and verticalbar b adapted and arranged to hold said slides in place, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. 3. The combination of the photographholder A, consisting of the back a, lowerrod a cross-rods a, and the front plate a having the openings 4, 3, 2, and 1., photographic camera D, provided with the side openings to receive the diaphragm B, and niultiplying-diaphragm B, consisting of the board I), having the vertical openings 1), and slides 1, 2, 3, and 4, arranged to slide upon said board and close the said openings, said slides made to cooperate with the openings 4, 3, 2, and 1 and with said camera D, for the purposes and in the manner above described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I SOREN CHRISTIAN MADSEN. Witnesses: L. G. DAVIS, E. M. PROCTOR. |
